“Self-Identification” — A Semester in Conversation

Video introduction for the Skepsis Philosophy Club website

What does it mean to say “I” with honesty and care? Last semester, Skepsis launched a campus-wide interview project on self-identification. In this video, our club founder reflects on how the project was conceived, how we listened, and what we learned—about names, roles, losses, ambitions, and the stories we tell to make a life feel coherent.

The initiative brought students and teachers into slow, thoughtful dialogue rather than quick takes. We experimented with open-ended prompts, minimal editing, and long silences that allowed meaning to surface. Along the way, we met recurring tensions: authenticity vs. performance, belonging vs. independence, labels as both protection and constraint. The video traces these threads and offers a candid account of what worked, what didn’t, and how philosophy—done in public—can widen everyday courage.

Why watch?
If you’re curious about how philosophy can move from the page into lived experience, this is our field note—an invitation to think with us, and perhaps to speak next time.

Produced by Skepsis Philosophy Club. Directed and narrated by the club founder.
